Operation: Be Prepared

>>  Wednesday, April 1, 2009

In light of my recent discovery of a particular Weakness, I am determined to be more prepared in all aspects of mine and my families survival. I did what I do best and began the research. I was over-whelmed by everything and didn't know where to start. Because of this, I have decided to initiate my own Emergency Preparedness Program. A mission of sorts, to be prepared. And I am inviting all to participate. So...

Friends, Family, Stalkers, Bloggy Friends, Honorary Eagles....Your Mission, should you choose to accept is- Operation: Be Prepared

This is going to be 24 week mission. Our ultimate goal? To build 7 days worth of survival supplies. As your mission leader, I am by no means an expert, which is where all of you come in.

Are you in? Good! Lets get started. Your assignment will be to return here to headquarters on a bi-weekly basis. As you can see on your mission flight itinerary you are scheduled to meet back here on the 1st and 15th of each month -for the next assignment in this mission. Each time we meet, you will be given a list of supplies needed for survival and the tasks that must be completed prior to your return here.

Honorary Eagles, it is your job to be informed, be prepared and spread the word. Be resourceful and encourage others to join our forces. Your list of supplies needed for the week are as follows. Be sure to act fast, as this message is set to self destruct in 5...4...3...2..1......

Survival List:
1 Gallon of Water*
1 Jar Peanut Butter
2 Large Cans Juice
2 Cans Meat *
1 Hand Operated Can Opener
1 Permanent Marker
Pet Food
Diapers
Baby Food/Formula

*Per Person

This Weeks Tasks:
Date Perishable items with a marker
Decide on and 'out of area' contact who can coordinate information for scattered family members (if needed).

Notes From Headquarters:
With the exception of Tuna or Chicken, my family is not accustomed to canned meats. In order to avoid buying things that would not get eaten, I have opted to add vacuumed sealed Beef Jerky, in addition to the Tuna and Chicken we are already accustomed to. To satisfy the Canned Juice order, I have opted for juice boxes or like drinks..preferably in the foil packages.

Although I have kids, they are no longer in need of baby food or formula, so I have opted for some additional meat and peanut butter.

Also, I found a GREAT deal this week on the Portable Buddy Heater by Mr. Heater.

Cabelas is currently offering factory refurbished models for half the price. Ranging in price from $99.99 to $149.99, I was able to pick one up a refurbished model for only $49.99. Some may be turned off by the fact that it is 'refurbished', but they are guaranteed to work. *Just be sure to give it a good test run SOONER..than later!*

When you pick up your portable heater be sure to pick up propane. I was not able to locate any specials for propane on their website, however on a trip into the store itself, they were offering a 6 pack of compatible propane tanks for $24.99.

Safe Travels Honorary Eagles!

Visiting from BSU and great ideas on emergency prep which is crucial where I live in wildfire and earthquake country.
Beautiful family pictures, thank you.

i should totally do this! i would have a major peace of mind about me!

Kristina P. 01 April, 2009 09:20

My emergency prepardness plan consists of me going to my coworker's house, and mooching off her kit.

Erin 01 April, 2009 09:24

What a great idea! We had a lesson on Sunday about emergency preparedness, and although I am working on it, I'm nowhere close to being "done." Thank you for this!

Oh, this is something that my family and I need to work on and put together! Thanks for all the info and head start for the plan!!!

Debbie 01 April, 2009 10:49

I have made these kits before and my problem is that I never remember to rotate out the food. It goes bad for years before I remember.

Jo 01 April, 2009 11:03

Shoot, I really need to redo ours. I like the MRE's personally. But yours is way easy to do with what is readily available. Good assignment!

I love this idea! We are always talking about doing it but never actually commit! But now that I am an Honorary Eagle, I am doing it! I love the beef jerky idea. That would work better for us too.

Thanks for doing this!

There is one other thing you might want to think about getting. It is something to do with no water and with kids they have to go. A portable camping potty with a tarp for privacy and water purification tablets to help with water if it gets contaminated.

Those things are yet to come. This is only Week 1 of a 24 week project.

You are so good to be doing this. I need to get going with our family's emergency preparedness, so thank you for the added motivation and help.

We bought a generator this winter, for just in case situations. They have been promoting the survival kit here in Ontario for several years. I pretty much have everything. Water seems to be the main problem, people keep drinking it.

Just curious, but may I ask what prompted this??
