Weakness
>> Thursday, March 26, 2009
There is nothing like an untimely power outage (thanks to our not so spring like, much more like winter weather -in the middle of March) to expose not only ones addictions, but weaknesses as well. The addictions, definitely being in the form of all the electronics we depend on. For example- the water and ice dispenser –luckily I had a bottled water in the fridge. At one point, I was afraid I was going to have to get a drink from the tap.
The addictions were curbed, with an early bed time for the kids and a book light for me. The weakness however, was much more difficult to overcome. We discovered very quickly that between the 4 members of our household, we had 1 flashlight that could be found, half a dozen tea light candles –with nothing to put them on, one Bic stick lighter, and half a dozen wickless candles –because I warm them on a warmer plate. I did manage to steal the flashlight long enough to dig out our battery operated camping lanterns. Only to discover that we had no batteries for them.
It should be no surprise that a trip to Walmart is a priority today. I will be purchasing the makings of what I am calling mini ‘let there be light’ kits, -one for each bedroom, and additional ones in all the main living areas.
I’ve also dug out our 72 hour backpacks, and they will be filled and ready to go by weeks end. I’ve had great expectations for them for over a year now. Now is the time that they succeed and we be prepared. It’s just to bad it took a minor ‘incident’ to remind me how important it is to stay on top of it all.

Kenny and I did the same thing the other morning. Power went out and we only found one flashlight in our storage in the basement! We had to use the lights of our cell phones to get there cause it was 5:00 in the morning! Needless to say, he came home with flashlights just last night, so we are good now!
I remember once when we were without power for many hours, we ran an extension cord from the power invertor in the van to living room so the boy could watch his video. Whewww, crisis averted.
Good one for planning on being more prepared. Perhaps I should take a page from your book.
This is a great reminder to be prepared! I need to do the same. That stinks that you lost power--I hope it wasn't out for too long!
We are pretty much the same here. Although we have a bunch of candles. But they are all scented and now I'm wondering what the house would smell like if I had to light them all. That might get stinky. We also have propane and oil lanterns in the shed if we needed to use them.
Oh and our 72 hour kits are coming out just before Conference to switch out clothes and everything.
i always have a torch handy, but the batteries always manage to be flat just whe I need it...so candles, yes...matches...ermmm...where are they again???
This is so true at our house too. We are always stumbling around trying to find the flashlight when the power goes out. I love the idea of mini light kits for each room. Thank you for that! I think that is definitely on my agenda for this weekend:)
You all sound like us, I would be trying to hunt down and find any kind of flashlight that worked!
Here in Ont. we are encouraged to be prepared for a 72 hour emergency. Great idea any time.
We have a couple of those handy flashlights with the cranks so no batteries are needed. We keep one in every room and one in each car... Now if I could only remember to pick up a radio to use during power outages I would be good!
I was lucky enough to hit the gym right after the power went out, when I was getting ready I kept trying to turn the light on, funny how we take those things for granted.
I remember when the power went out in our house. The showers still worked, but showering in the dark gives me the skeevies.
This is a good reminder to be prepared for those inevitable spring storms.
When the year 2000 rolled around I think we bought like 30 flashlights, 30 candles, lots of batteries and guess what?? No where to be found!!!
Took a power outage to get me a little more prepared, too. But I don't let the kids have their own flashlights...they just find them and wear the batteries out.
we actually have a little emergency box at our house... full of canned food, flashlights, matches, candles... we tend to be a bit paranoid!!
Good luck keeping the batteries stocked. I don't know what I'd do if the power went out at my house. I guess I'd just go to sleep until the lights came back on.
