Pesky Little Pickers
>> Monday, August 2, 2010
I found it odd that they suddenly began appearing {in droves} in our now treeless yard. Why had I not seen them when the trees were still there? I had myself convinced that maybe we had displaced them when we destroyed their home.
Thinking nothing more of it, I've enjoyed their songs and welcomed them...until recently....
After watching one dash through the yard carrying a strawberry, I realized why they had been making their regular visits. The pesky little pickers were picking at my garden. Those songs they sang, were not songs at all. Announcements instead. Announcing the gettin' of good fruit in my garden.
I thought it odd that my tomatoes were multiplying faster than I could pick them, yet my strawberries never seemed to ripen. They were ripening, and being claimed by someone {or thing} other than me.

Those little winged devils! Sounds like word got out all over birdville about your very delectable berries!

oooooh i tell ya!!!
you know.. some are total bird people.. NOT ME.. for some reason they tend to freak me out...
here's a funny story.. about 5 yrs ago jack (my parents cat) killed the mate of a bird.. and now.. every spring when that one bird comes back to their yard.. he sees it as his mission to torment poor jack.. he dive bombs him for the sky ALL day loooong... poor cat.. didn't know what he was getting into!!!... lol
Beautiful birds, but sound like major berry thieves!
Coming home from Thanksgiving dinner last year there were a TON of robins flittering through my neighborhood. They were concentrated in one yard in particular, one with berries or crabapples still on the tree. It really looked like something from the movie The Birds. VERY WEIRD.
