What's a mother to do?

>>  Tuesday, August 3, 2010

My oldest {the one and only Mo-Tay} has me worried. The little guy is irritable and cranky the majority of most days. Now, he's always been a strong willed one, but never irritable. I suspected for some time that he wasn't getting enough sleep. The easy solution -I thought, was to adjust his bedtime. Still, however, after an extra two hours of sleep each night, he is still waking in no better mood than the day before.

I discovered {after he talked me into allowing him sleep with me}, that although he's sleeping long hours, he doesn't seem to be getting a peaceful rest; as he tosses and turns, and talks and kicks, and tosses and turns..again and again.

My first fear is that he is suffering from night terrors, something I'm all too familiar with. Yet when I question him -if that is what's going on, he has no recollection of dreams, good or bad.

I'm at a loss. Any other mothers out there experience similar things? Do children his age {age 5} experience insomnia or other sleep related issues? Anyone. Bueller. Bueller. *tapping mic* This thing on?

I think they can. Have you talked to his pediatrician?

Could be growing pains. Have you tried tylenol before bed?

Definitely time to consult the pediatritian. He shouldn't be spending his days cranky.

My daughter had terrible night terrors. The only advice I have is that they outgrow it. I know its terrible..

Our oldest is a restless sleeper and he has been helped with homeopathic remedies including Calmes Forte, available drugstores, Wallmrt, chamomille.
Good luck, Danielle, please keep us posted on your precious Mo-tay.

I agree with the doctor thing.

My son is five and sometimes he has insomnia, but overall he sleeps pretty well. Once he's asleep he usually stays that way until morning. But when he doesn't get enough sleep, we all know it. Things that have helped him to sleep well are a predictable bedtime routine, a nice warm bath (a lavender bubble bath is good and promotes relaxation and sleep...California Baby at Target makes a great one), no or very limited sugar after lunch, a dark room, and white noise. I hope you can get to the root of this and that he starts sleeping better soon!

Perhaps sleep apnea??? Have your doc look into his tonsils... Snoring is NOT a requirement (although it can be a good indicator) that he's not getting enough air during the night.
Also... Bath & Body Works has a great lotion and body wash/bubble bath that is wonderful for "relaxation" before sleep. It's their aroma therapy line... "Stress Relief". I have been using it for my bouts of insomnia...
good luck my friend!

Poor little guy....I agree that your pediatrician would be a good resource. It could be a phase, but if it goes on more than a week, I'd make the call. Good luck.

This may sound old fashioned, but I would give him some warm milk right before bedtime. Also rub his calves. Both things are relaxing. If it turns our not to be a sleep thing, he might be experiencing seperation(from you) anxiety. He is at an age when little boys are really close to their mommy's. Just a thought.
