....With the Sound of Music
Once said to be my favorite movie of all time. I want to share the story of how that little rumor came into existence.
You see, I was in high school. My 3rd hour class my sophomore year consisted of spiritual enlightenment in the form of Seminary. (*gasp* I know. Many would not expect such stories from my irreverent self.) It’s all true, but beside the point.
My 3rd hour teacher thought a fun way for us to get to know each other would be to spotlight each of his students, one at a time, at random. In order to get information about each of us, he would call home during the day and talk to our parents.
I waited patiently for my day to come. Not because I wanted it to happen, but rather to get it over with. Little did I know how badly I would want it to end. The day my turn came, I knew it had arrived as the teacher announced… “Todays Spotlight is an only child” Yup! That’s me. It had to be. I live in the land of Zion. Being an only child is almost unheard of. Next, he announced “She has a cat named J.T.” Confirmation. It had to be me. Confusion didn’t set in until he said “..and her favorite movie is The Sound of Music”. NOPE! Not me. I was shocked to hear there was another person in the room with a cat named J.T. What were the odds?
I still didn’t believe it as he announced that he was talking about me! Huh? What? I was stuck…. The Sound of Music? Was my mother really that out of touch with my reality? Geesh!
I denied the Sound of Music allegations for the remainder of the hour. I remember vividly marching through the door of our home that afternoon, having just gotten off the school bus. The first words out of my mouth “THE SOUND OF MUSIC”. Which was met with my mothers signature (I would know it anywhere) laugh. I had been duped. She told the teacher that just to get a rise. I thought I would die.
To this day we joke about it being my favorite movie. When it makes its annual appearance on television (because I don’t own it), my parents will call and ask if I have set my DVR to record it. Parents!!
*For the record, it is a good movie. Just not one that hits my all time favorite, at least not as a teenager.
24 Pepsi Points :
grrr. I hate to say it.. but I hate that movie!! yuck!
Here's where I sound like a total goof, but I have never seen it. I'm not a movie person, could care less about them and TSOM looks like something that would be at the bottom of my 'to watch' list.
If my teachers called home and asked my parents they probably would have embarrassed me too, because they are so good at it.
Why don't teachers call home like that now?
That story is too funny! I agree it is a good movie but I can not sit through it.
That is too funny!! I too am an only child!!
Funny! Not one of my all time faves. Even though one of the songs is, one of my faves.
I once watched it with a bunch of missionaries. I will never be the same. I giggle everytime.
Haha, that was a good story!! :)
lol... mothers! thats all there is to say!
Am I the only one who can't wait to things like this to my kids?
Truth be told--I have NEVER seen The Sound of Music.
That is hilarious! I am so going to do that to my kids! LOL!
Hysterical! How funny that your mom did that. I actually love that movie and always have. I served my missio in Austria where the film takes place and even got to run the hills where Julie Andrews is running on the cover of the movie (the one you have posted). My arms are outstretched like hers. Ahhh, thanks for the memories!
That is so funny! I would have made fun of you.
Too funny!!! That is something MY parents would have done. We must be sisters.
that is funny. i do love the sound of music- good story.
My husband does that to me whenever I'm "spotlighted" or whatever in church. Once he said I collect teddy bears. Another time, he said mt favorite food is bananas. I *HATE* bananas. I won't even open them for my kids because I can't stand to touch them.
So funny. I actually did like The Sound of Music when I was young, but upon viewing it with my kids recently, I felt it was boring.
That's pretty funny. I like that movied alot ----but not my favorite. My favorite is "Camelot"----soooooooo what is YOUR favorite, you left us hanging??
I think I like your mom. That is something I would totally do. Except I would've said that you sang the songs constantly and told the teacher to ask you to sing "My favorite things" Cuz that's how I roll.
That is too funny. I have parents like that too.
I've never seen that movie all the way through.
And that sounds like something my mom would do. Definitely.
She "gotcha!".
Great story.
Your Mom sounds fun!
ROFL!! That sounds like something I'd do to my poor kid... My sister just finished reading the autobiography of Maria and said the movie paints a MUCH rosier picture of her and their situation then was reality.
Dang.....that is my second favorite movie of all time. The first is "Wizard of Oz".
I like your mom. Sounds like something I would do. So what was your favorite movie at the time?
