What ever did we do?

What ever did we do before the existence of the internet? As I sit at my desk, slaving away, I begin to wonder this very thing. More than half of the applications I use, or the databases I access on an hourly basis, let alone daily basis are web-based. Not to mention the things I do in my free time. Everything -from shopping, locating definitions and answers to blogging. I haven’t reached the point where I have my emails sent to my cellular phone. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t thought about it.
Without the internet, I feel crippled. What if I miss an email? What if I need something? Having high speed internet at my disposal 24/7 has made my dependency just that much worse. I can honestly remember sitting in the High School library -yes High School, thumbing through encyclopedias for reports and other research projects. And as old as I may feel, I haven’t been out of high school even a decade yet. Almost, but not quite.
Now, with lightning speed and precision the whole world is at our fingertips. Literally. I know that with that comes some bad, but the good. The good is GREAT! I sit down every week and fill my time-card out online. My first job ever, you had to write your name on a little blue card index card and use a punch clock to log your hours. Now, with the touch of a button, the computer tallies my hours worked according to my regular schedule, calculates holidays and shows me my leave balance.
What does it feel like to receive a letter in the mail? I honestly can’t remember the last time I received something that personal –aside from greeting cards and announcements. That’s just it. Without trouble, and with incredible speed, one can send an email. Don’t get me wrong, I think having email is the greatest thing since sliced cheese. But there is something great about getting a hand written letter. The emotion, the feelings and the authors personality can be better felt through something written by hand.
As we skip forward into the future, with the technology available, especially as the holidays approach –I want to pose a challenge to everyone, myself especially. A challenge to write that letter, read a good book –borrowed from someone or the library, and take the time to hand deliver a message rather than sending it through email, text or other digital means. As great as the computers of the world are, and the means they provide us to keep in contact with one another, they will never be able to re-create the human interaction that we all need.

I love getting personal e-mail. But a fun letter in the mail rocks!
It's very true. I would be lost without technology.
Hey, and congrats on getting your daytime priveledges back!
I totally get what you mean, but I am very proud of myself cuz I just mailed a card last week. And honestly, it was a pain.
Great post. We actually had a Relief Society lesson not too long ago where the teacher was challenging all of us to write letters to those we care about. The reason behind it was so that they could have something with your handwritting on it and so that it was more personal because you had actually handwritten it. This post reminded me of that lesson and that I need to get my butt in gear and do it!!
It hard to imagine my world without this wonderful technology! We use it for school, work, home, entertainment Wow!☺
I'm the same way, but with my cellphone.
I couldn't stand to be without it. When I go to camp in the summer, there's absolutely no service in the mountains. A week with no cell phone... drives me insane! I guess it'll be easier this time without a boyfriend to text.
Well, I can't say that. I don't know what'll happen in the coming months!
my kids got a letter today from their cousins today and you would have thought we were seeing the princesses at disneyland. it was awesome.
i am going to write a letter to someone! too bad i don't have your address...
It's amazing how the Internet has changed things so much. I think about that too--what did we ever do without it? I do miss writing letters though. I used to be so good about that. Thanks for the motivation to still make time for that. I'm going to try!
I LOVE letters, but LOVE a GOOD email too. I am addicted to anything that runs on electricity so it is a good thing I live today!
That's probably why the mail sits in my mailbox for days on end without getting picked up! And when the computers are down at work, it's almost a celebration cuz we know we won't have work to do and can go home! Have a great Thanksgiving.
I am totally with you on this. I love getting cards in the mail. Too bad I am too lazy to make Christmas cards myself, knowing how much people like receiving them!
Good point. When I got my haircut today the credit card machine was down and they had to do it the old-fashioned way of taking down the card number and it seemed so out-of-date!
I always send friends and family cards/letters in snail mail. I love getting "real" mail!
That is one of the reasons I love this time of year. So many reasons to be more personal!
I really like the internet too! I hate to use the word love. Happy Thanksgiving!
Hard to believe that we ever lived without it--things go so much faster now, so I can get more done.
Although some things I do not think should be done via internet, like invitations to real events....things change, and not always for the better
