Father Knows Best!

>>  Wednesday, January 6, 2010

We'vd had some very trying days at my home -as of late. Most of the trials have been centered around my 4 year old. My sweet, smart, curious boy has turned into an anxious, rambunctious, destruction ::ahem:: terror.

I've -literally- been at my wits end with him. I knew that the majority of it had to do with the fact that he was on break from school. School, being something his little heart, mind and soul craves. Board games, stories and singing, just not satisfying his hunger.

Exhausted and out of resources, I called -one of the wisest men I know, my Father. I cried and I whined "I have things to do" (specifically some hemming and button replacement). My fathers wisdom? Simple. Engage him. Challenge him. "He's a highly intelligent child" he says. "Give him an old pair of pants and a stapler. Let him hem his own pants" His last parting words being, "Challenge him, he will change"

I was short on spare pairs of pants, and there isn't a stapler to be found. A holy sock would have to do, I thought to myself. I gave him the least deadly needle -I could come up with, and button.
I'm so proud! This sock is officially hole free and buttoned up tight.

Once again, Father knows best. He was right. Today, my Mo-tay is a completely and totally different child. He's gone back to his love-able ways.

Now, does anyone need their socks darned or a button replaced?

My six-year-old is the same. Thanks for the tip. Next time he's driving me crazy, I'll turn the tables. I'll give him a sock, a button, and some thread and see what he comes up with. Your dad is one smart man!

That is a great idea! I will need to do that soon to keep my son busy. He doesn't start preschool again until Monday.

That is a mighty fine job your son did.
Your Dad is very wise, such a blessing.
I think so much of raising boys, especially young ones is Tiring them out.

Now I know what you were talking about in your Facebook status update the other day!

Your father gives good advice. I need to use it with my own 4-year-old boy, who sometimes drives me nuts with similar behavior!
