A Legacy

Not only a legacy, but my legacy. Her legacy. Her, being my grandmother. My fathers mother. I have nothing but sweet, sweet memories. Post-it notes, Butterflies, Pink Pencils, Bobby Pins and most of all books and Crocheting.
I imagine, no -I KNOW, my love of all things office supplies, my thirst for books and butterflies are inherited from her. It seems only natural that I would aspire to create as she did, through crocheting. As far as I know, all 9 of her grandchildren have one of her 'infamous' Ripple/Zig-Zag patterned afghans -'Grandma Marion Afghans', as they have been called. Their pattern a trade-mark, and the colors chosen tell a story. In fact, for those of you that live locally to my Eagles Nest, you may be familiar with Woods Cross High. Set back, just off the freeway. For many years, orange panels adorned its exterior walls. My Grandad worked for the school district for many years. It was he, that chose the building materials -colors included, for the schools he attended to.
Those orange panels were inspired by an afghan my grandmother was crocheting. If my memory serves me correctly, it happens to be one of my older cousins 'Grandma Marion Afghans'. It was a sad sad day when the school district chose to remodel, removing the faded orange panels. For many, they were an eye-sore. For some, a fond memory. A reminder. But I digress.
My Grandmother has been gone for many years now, almost 9 to be exact. With her, was taken the knowledge. The know how, on how to replicate her trade-mark pattern. Something I have ALWAYS seen as a symbol of her. The knowledge was gone, but not lost. For I set out to rediscover it. I found it. Mastering it.
I can't wait to share them. Share her with my children, and their children and my childrens, children.
My current mastering of the art...

How fun! Is crocheting relaxing? My grandma (on my mom's side) knitted. I still have a sweater she knitted for me when I was eight years old. She died five years ago. I love how memories like that help us remember the legacy that is our grandparents.
What a great tribute to your grandmother! I admire your ability to crochet and the legacy you carry on.
I needed a "Grandma Marion"! I always wanted an afghan like that but no one gifted me with one so I finally had to learn how to crochet enough to make one for myself - which I did. Then I totally forgot what I had learned and now I couldn't crochet if i had to. Yes, the skill is becoming lost. Your Grandma would be so pleased to know just how much you love her work!
I love that you have mastered this lost art and will pass it on to your kids. Wonderful.
How fun! My grandma does the same thing for all the grandkids and she's working on the great grandkids. So far all I've been able to do is dish clothes. :) Nice job on your blanket!!
Good job!
My grandmother used to knit these amazing stockings for us when we were babies. We all still have them, but she can no longer knit. Recently both my sister and one of my sis-in-laws found theold patterns and have started making them for thenew little ones that never got them before grandma's eyes got so bad. It is such a gift to see them carrying on her tradition, and she loves it when they call for help in figuring out these amazing works of art!
what a wonderful tribute to an obviously wonderful grandmother. I've never been able to knit or crochet, my mum can knit amazing things, it relaxes her, my nans too....i have tried and tried so many times...i'm rubbish lol! i got my dads talent for drawing and painting instead...
anyway, gone off track there lol...these are beatiful, how lovely to be able to pass them down, and the talent for crocheting too
great post!
have a great day!
So beautiful, very sweet. Your Grandmother sounds like a special person.
That's so special that you're carrying on your grandmother's skills and interests like that. It looks like it will be a beautiful afghan.
All I can say is I love you- Fatherson
