A Girl and Her Guns

Warning: Gun Talk. Not the kind of Gun talk you expect, but nonetheless...Guns. I know we are not all Gun friendly, please feel free to skip this one.For the rest of you...Here goes...

I haven't always been a gun totin', ammo wastin', clip clickin' kind of gal. Nope! No-sir-ee! Not me! In fact just the opposite. Can you say terrified? Beyond frightened. I would cry at the mere sight of a gun.

I think the bulk of it came from the unknown. I was not raised with firearms in the house, I have only step-brothers that came into my life later in the game and the word gun equaled murder and death. All I knew is what I had heard. "Guns Kills" "Never touch a gun, it will kill you"..the typical.

So the story goes, years ago -almost 10, I applied for a job at a local Sheriff's office. A clerical position. I interviewed and was offered a job. Only 19 years old myself and longing to be independent, I took the job. It wasn't until I delivered the news to my father, that I realized what I had done. "I got a job!" I announced. His reply? "You know the guys carry guns, right?!!" WHAT! What guys?

Wait..that's right I had just gotten a job with the local 'heat', the 5-0. It was clerical. Answering phones, doing paperwork..but I would be answering phones for THEM, doing paperwork for THEM. Them, being officers. The ones with the shiny badges and the G.U.N.S.

My thirst for money and independence won the battle and I continued forth. Starting my new job in November 1999. I remember the first few times an officer would come into my work space. I would literally inch my chair in the opposite direction as they approached. Tears welling up behind my eyes. Fear taking over. Always watching their side-arm, I had anxiety induced moments where I feared the officers turning away from me. Convinced that if they turned their muzzles towards me that the gun could go off without warning, and I would be killed.

All of this made my job incredibly difficult. They all had them. I couldn't get a way from them. The guns, that is. And to make matters worse, they talked about them like they were just another accessory and they had a tendency to touch them..holstered, but still.

I went through a desensitization period. Each passing day I became more comfortable with each aspect. First the sight of the firearms strapped to each officers hip, followed by the chit chat. About a year into my career, I came home with a request. I said -to my father, "Don't say a word, take me to the gun shooting range.." He did. He made me empty every firearm he owned at the time, until I was comfortable.

The rest? Well, is history my friend. That one day at the range led to a purchase of a firearm, to time at the range, and ultimately led to my Front Sight experience. My views have changed drastically over the last 10 years. I've learned a lot. Became better educated. The truth is..I didn't start out this way. I had to want it. I had to earn it.

Im sure you have heard it said....guns dont kill people, people kill people.

Our stories are very similar... I was terrified of guns and I grew up in a house full of them!

I so scared of them that, like you, the sight of them caused my eyes to well up. Then, I had Caleb. With the prospect of Adam doing a lot of traveling and being at home by myself a lot, I decided that I needed some kind of protection.

I spent a long time picking out the perfect weapon for me but I am comfortable with it and that makes all the difference in the world.

Great story, Thanks a bunch for sharing your story. I have a healthy respect for all weapons after working ER/surgery for many years. I have spent time at the gun and archery range and find shooting anything, arrows, bullets to be very relaxing and meditative. I think it's the focus required. Thanks again, hope you have a great weekend.

I loved hearing this about you!

And I'm not scared of guns at all. I'm just not a fan. :)

in the Uk its not common for people to have guns. well, no one ordinary has them! gun crime is up, especially with teens, sadly, but that is a different thing entirely. i have to admit, they scare me, and i've never even held one!

It was great to read this about you!! I am a gun lover. I want one as well as a conceal to carry permit. But first we (my hubby wants the same) have to save the money because it's not cheap!!

Hubby is about to buy gun #2 for target practice. He keeps bugging me to join in but I resist. I'd probably like it if I tried it.

Sorry I didn't get that email until now. I'm so not in a groove yet. At. All.

I'm glad you found me. I rely on that so I can find everyone again because I lost everything. :(

I followed you again. :)

And I missed you!!!

Interesting story! We had tons of guns at my house growing up, and my dad's reloading room was right next door to my bedroom. I always worried that one might accidentally go off and go through my wall to hit me on my bed. Of course, my dad is the safest person in the whole world with his guns, but it didn't stop me from worrying :)

I didnt grow up around guns either. My husbands family are mostly avid hunters so when we started dating I started learning more and more. Like you I earned my way into it. Practice, safety classes, permit classes, ownership, etc.

Did you enjoy your job there other than the initial fear? I think it'd be a fascinating place to work. (My hubby has looked into working for the Sheriffs office...right before all the hiring freezes/economy blah.)

As you know, we have lots and lots of guns at my house, a reloading station and a commando proficient person.

It's all good. (I sort of want to work at the sheriff's office... just so I can know the 411 on everything/everyone. Hey. I have a scanner... does that help??)

I grew up around them and spent many hours as a teenager shooting them with my friends. As an adult mom I almost never get to do it and I sorta miss it! I am proud of you for getting past the fear!

I'm too scared of guns to have one. My husband wants to take me to the shooting range to get me comfortable with one but I just don't like the idea of keeping one in the house. A friend of mine has them all over his house and I'm always nervous to sit down anywhere because I know he keeps at least one under the cushion in his recliner and one in the couch!

I agree with Cammie 100%! Everyone in this nation has the right to bears if they choose.

I love that you faced your fear and educated yourself! Good for you!
