I Think They Call it Night Blindness!
>> Monday, January 26, 2009
As we recently shoveled the driveway -freeing it of the days fallen snow, my oldest convinced himself that the building of a snowman was in his near future.
It was late, it was dark, and I was cold. I gently told him “No, dude..it's dark and it’s almost dinner time….maybe another day”. This answer however, was not satisfying, and was met with repetitive "Why's?".
So, in reply to his constant “Why’s?”. I simply explained, “Snowmen can’t see in the dark. You will have to wait for another day.” A sidewards glance followed by a "Hmph" was all I heard. One more meltdown diverted, at least for now.
Since the days to follow, I have heard the echos of my boys convincing others of these truths. If one of my boys comes to you and announces “Snowmen can’t see in the dark”, you heard it here first!

I can't believe you pulled out the old snowmen can't see in the dark trick. And the reason I can't believe it is because NOBODY has ever tried that trick before. ;) You're hilarious!
Good one;0)
Coal is pretty tricky to see through.
I'll keep that in mind if I get asked...he he
We still have a pile of snow where ours was.
Boy are you in trouble when he finds out they can have surgery to correct that!
My verification word is:douters
(minus the "b")Is that funny? Your little fellows may be doubters of what mom tells them about snowmen!
Just wait till they go to school and say, "My MaMa said. . .". You're gonna be so busted!
LOVE it!! I would answer them that I, too, am blind at night--legally!!
i love how children totally trust what their parents say.
we don't usually get snow here, but if we had it all the time and i was cold and just needed to make dinner, i would totally use that line!
Ha! too funny... snowmen can't see in the dark- thats a memory there! kinda like the time my stepson wanted ketchup for his hotdog.. we were out.. so i squited out mustard and told him it was yellow ketchup.... worked like a charm!
Ha-ha! Love it. That is the cutest answer I have heard yet!
clever, until he talks to the finished snowman one day and he hears great tales of things that happen on your street at night, when you are all sleeping, and it's dark.
May he stay in the dark for a little while at least.
At least you got to bed on time!
It is true snowmen do suffer from night blindness. They see better in the day when the sun reflects off the snow.
Fun post.
Watch out! He might soon find some glasses to put on the snowman to help him with that vision and look out for long extension cords dragged in the snow with an expensive table lamp to light the yard. Good one!
You should get a snowcone maker and let them make mini-snowmans.
But no one can replace my Raymond.
And you know, Snowmen can't see in the dark. No one can.
It definitely makes sense.
I had no idea! That would explain why you never see people building snowman at night. Another curious fact explained, I feel so much better now.
It's great the things we tell our kids to get them to stop with their questions or begging. That's a good one that you came up with!
That's hilarious!
