An Old Friend

>>  Sunday, September 7, 2008

You may be asking yourself "What in the World...?" I was feeling a little sentimental a few nights ago and summoned an old friend. I would like to introduce you to Mr. Tink. My childhood blanket. I can hear you snickering and letting out an un-necessary string of jokes. But my weathered friend hasn't always looked this way.

In his day (Yes, its a he! Just like most cars are Shes. Besides there is no rhyme or reason to a small childs reasoning), he wasn't quite so transparent. If you look closely, made of woven material, every other thread is thinner than the previous thread. Those thinner strands were once pastel shades of pink, blue and yellow, his edges covered with a white satin, printed with vibrant yellow ducks.

I remember as a small child, not particularly caring for the yellow ducks and was more than eager to pick away at the outer edges and they began to fray, exposing the biased edge. I must admit, that looking at its current state, it is probably the biased edge that has kept him together for all these years.

I have had a hard time putting back into his safe little box, but it is necessary as he has become so frail with time, I'm afraid he might just disintegrate. But Oh, the memories. Over the years my loyal friend has nursed me through summer colds, winter illness, broken hearts, nightmares, and just plain 'ol bad days.

I don't think I have any childhood things anymore. I did have a stuffed dog, but I think he was taken to the pound a long time ago. :)

love it! i just did a post about blankets. reading your's makes me think i should have gone way back and included my baby blanket that i still have.

in fact, to ensure that my son's favorite blanket doesn't get all shredded and so that we don't ever have to come to the day where we have to rip it out of his hands to throw away, we bought 3 of them and just rotate through them. it has come in so handy when we accidentally leave it somewhere.

great post.
