Fifths Disease

>>  Wednesday, July 2, 2008

Most kids get chicken pocks, strep throat, or the stomach flu. Not my Seth. After developing a rather disturbing rash yesterday, he was diagnosed with a little something they call Fifths Disease.

What is Fifths Disease? It's a virus infection caused by the human virus parvovirus B19. A little medical insight for you. I guess its name is historic. The infection at one time was counted among the five classical rash-associated childhood infections. The other four were Measles, Scarlet Fever, Rubella, and the Fourth Disease.

I guess they ran out of names...and didn't know what else to call these uncomfortable rashes. At our house, its going to be the Seth Rash. Only my little guy would come up with something like this. I guess its rather common, but many people never know they have gotten, as they don't always develop the signature rash.

Our Seth has always been that .0001% of the population, that experiences the side effects many of us didn't even know typical illness's or medications can cause.

It must be going around this year. Now Little M has it, and one of the records clerks has a little boy with it....
