Pittsburgh Pennsylvania

My mother, for as long as I can remember has always sang various songs, many of which I have never heard except from her. I remember vividly one experience where we happened to be on vacation. She had sang several songs through out the entire trip, keeping us entertained. At some point, being the "know it all" teenager I could be, I turned to her and asked if she was making these songs up, and if there was anything she couldn't sing about.

Being her wise self, she challenged me. I remember her saying "Pick something, I'm sure there is a real song out there, I will sing it.." Just then we passed a Pawn Shop. So I challenged her with just that....Pawn Shop. I can still recall the site of that little brown wood sided building, its yellow sign announcing PAWN SHOP, sitting in the center of the city of Payette Idaho. And my mothers song...."There's a Pawn Shop on the corner in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.."

It wasn't until years later, that I heard one of her sisters singing the same song that I believed that it was truly a real song, and not just something my mother had made up.

So here's to you mama....
