Stop, Drop, and Read

>>  Sunday, August 15, 2010

I'm an avid reader. I will go through phases where I spend more time reading magazine articles and blogs than I do actual novels, but reading remains such a big part of who I am. I've tried to instill that in my children as well. To keep their interest we make regular trips to the library and read regularly.

When Mo-Tay's kindergarten teacher announced that my little guy should be read to for 20 minutes a day, I {naively} figured I had it. Easy peasy. That one more book in the evening would take care of us.

Yeah. Not so much.

I feel like we are constantly reading. We eat. We read. We play. We read. We read before we can sleep.

Seriously.

20 minutes of reading can burn through every library book in the house and at least half of our own collection. I've actually began mixing in chapter books {age appropriate, of course}, because we can get our 20 minutes of reading and still have something to read again the next day.

I just keep reminding myself that I'm building a better future for him. Right?!?

New followers from Relax and Surf Sunday :)
I almost want to say to grab one of those Stephen King books, because those are so HUGE you will have plenty of reading material..... but the side affect is the kids might be scarred for life, so better scratch that idea...LOL

I am only kidding you... of course :)

Enjoy your Sunday and your books and if you get a moment stop by our blog and say hi. See you later !!

I bribed my kids to do more reading by saying, "your bedtime is 8pm, however, if you want to read in bed for another 1/2 hour, you can have until 8:30". Worked every time.

McCoy has been required to read 20 minutes a night since Kindergarten. Now, in 6th grade we still argue over this 20 minute reading time. I have suscribed to hunting, science, etc. magazines to help us along. It is part of his grade. We have to sign that he reads each night! I am so over this!!!!

I remember having to get ENORMOUS stacks of books at the library to keep up with my daughter! It's a good thing, I think.

Yeah, it would take quite a bit rereading Goodnight Moon to get my 20 min in. :o)

When we got up to 20 minutes a day I did the same thing. Switched to chapter books. It's the only way!

My youngest boy is not a reader, it is like pulling teeth to get him to read his 20 mins. My oldest son stepped it up when he got in middle school but the series of books he was reading is over and he hasn't quite found another he enjoys just yet.
