The Hand Shake

>>  Tuesday, October 20, 2009

I'm a firm believer in offering my hand, for a friendly handshake when I meet someone new. Especially in professional situations. It fascinates me, how taken aback people are when I- 1.)offer my hand and 2.)offer a nice firm handshake, instead of a limp, dead fish.

Long gone (in my opinion) are the days of a man taking only a ladies fingers and being ever so gentle. Especially when I am the one that offered my hand in the first place.

I learned somewhere, that a handshake says a lot about you and can be a first impression. A lesson that has stuck with me, over the years. As well as, a lesson that seems to ring true. That being the reason that I express my confidence in myself in what I offer people.

So do tell.....Do you shy away from a handshake? Do you offer your best or the dead fish? Have you ever received a handshake that later was a true indication of that persons personality?

I am with you. It actually creeps me out when I get a limp handshake from a man.

I have a firm handshake, always have, I think it's a family trait.
You can tell so much about a person w/their handshake, it's scary!

I have a firm handshake only because I hate the limp fish I get...especially from men (I probably could have worded that better) I like to make a good solid impression and I feel a firm handshake is the way to do it!

I'm all about the firm handshake. I think it makes a very positive first impression.

Oh...I forgot to add, you never know where hands have been and I try not to think about it! I wash my hands often and shaking hands with someone who used the bathroom and didn't wash is the same as touching a grocery cart, or a door handle that has been touched by a dirty handed bandit.

Germs are everywhere...that's why I wash religiously!

If it's a formal situation, I go in for the handshake. My mom says I have "firm, very good" handshake. I'm not a floppy fish with my hand!

Definitely, a strong handshake! Floppy hands give me the willies! :)

I agree totally. Firm handshake! Last week my hubby introduced me to a man he was talking so I put out my hand and he sorta hesitated and then took it. THEN he says, "Oh, now I gotta go wash my hands." Thanks fella.

I hate the dead fish handshake, too. So I always shake back firmly, even when it's a man who is the fishy. The only exception would be an elderly person, who may have arthritic issues.

Firm handshake. If you're going to give one, do it right!

Josh and I are always having conversations about people's handshakes. I can't stand limp handshakes. And I can't stand when some woman give their hand like a hand shake in the mannerism like I should be kissing their hand or something. What the???

I'm anti- hand shake since I am a germaphobe and never know where people have been or what they have touched. I'll say Hi and wave instead.

If it is a close friend I'll hug them instead. How messed up does that sound?
