"Stop Looking at Me Swan"

>>  Wednesday, September 30, 2009

If you are acting suspicious on my watch, I'm going to check you out. Not in a friendly, 'Hey I wanna get which-ya' either. More like, 'Hey Buddy, what are you doing? and, You better stop!'

People I tell my stories to laugh and seem amazed at my brazenness. Just a few evenings ago, I found a goofy looking man walking the fence line between my home and a neighboring church. He looked startled as I exited my home -at the time, unaware that he was there. Always observant of my surroundings, I watched him. I watched him watch me and act odd.

So do you know what I did? I herded my baby sheep (read: my boys) back into the house, grabbed a flashlight (because it just after dusk) and shown my flashlight on him and the license plate of his truck. Making note of his license plate as well as the make and model of his car.

The truth is..I REFUSE to be a victim. I don't care if suspicious people know they have been "spotted". Isn't that the point? The police don't keep things from happening, they clean up the mess after the fact. It's my job (our job) to keep things from happening. We must be diligent. If you don't like being 'investigated' than don't act suspicious on my watch!

It's good you are on the watch all the time. There are some real weirdos out there and you are totally right, the police CLEAN UP the mess-they can't really prevent it

I am so with you on this. I trust my instincts and always think, "What if?"
Have you read the book by Gavin DeBecker, "The Gift of Fear?"
I highly recommend it, it's available through the public library and bookstores too.

Good for you!
A few years ago, I was at my mom's house and as we sat in her living room we watched a car drive slowly up and down the street while the driver looked over every house carefully.
I took the cordless phone, called the police and went outside stood next to the road and gave them his license # the next time he drove by. He saw me and did not come back.
There had been quite a few break ins in that neighborhood, and I hope that we prevented another one.

Way to go!

I have called the police when I see suspicious cars or people on my street. Right after our flood, some strange guy came to our house knocking on the door asking for gas money. As soon as my husband came to the door, he was in a hurry to leave. While they were talking I called the police. I gave them his description and not even a minute later the cop came rolling down the street and stopped the guy. Who knows if he was out to do something or if his story was true... and who cares - he shouldn't have been knocking on doors at 10pm! Never saw him again.

We just have to be vigilant.

Thats awesome. Depending on my surroundings I do the same thing too. I want people to realize they've been caught so they'll stop. If we just pretend we dont see it they'll know they can keep doing it.
Great post/story!

I know exactly what you mean.
I hate the fact that the police never actually STOP crime, they just clean up the mess.
I'm glad someone still has the common sense to scare off the suspicious people.

You go! What did he do after you blinded him with the flashlight?

tammy 01 October, 2009 10:34

Good for you! I think so many times we're afraid that we'll offend someone if we question what they're doing. Better to be safe!

Good for you, mama! I wish you lived in my neighborhood (back when I lived in a neighborhood, instead of sharing my front yard with a herd of cows. But, hummm, cows DO make great neighbors!)
:~D
