Operation: Be Prepared (Week 2)

>>  Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Welcome Back Honorary Eagles. I hope that you all were able to round up last weeks supplies and get through the weeks tasks. This week we will be focusing more on other supplies, rather than food. We will also be taking the time to focus on our family pets. Many of us have them, but when preparing for survival, they often don't cross our minds.

Survival List:
1 Heavy Cotton or Hemp Rope
1 Roll Duct Tape
Plastic Sheeting
Flashlight and Batteries*
Waterproof Matches
Leash or Pet Carrier
Extra set of I.D. Tags for Pet

*Per Person

This Weeks Tasks:
Sign Up For First Aid/CPR Classes at your Local Red Cross Location.

Notes From Headquarters:
I know at my house, time and resources can be limited. The idea of scheduling a First Aid/CPR classs is a daunting task. As a temporary solution, I have found some basic guides that can be purchased or printed, reviewed, and placed with your survival supplies.

-CPR Procedure
-The American Red Cross First Aid and Safety Handbook

By no means are these a solution, nor should they be used to treat yourself or anyone else in instances where there are trained professionals available, they would however, definitely be better than nothing during an emergency.

Pet items, was not something I initially thought of when I started this process. A good reminder to make sure I have provisions for our family pet as well. My family pet happens to be an indoor only cat. However, I have opted to purchase her some id tags that in the event of our evacuation she would be out-fitted with. In hopes that if we were separated, I would be able to find her again.

For those of us on a budget, to fulfil the order for plastic sheeting, I discovered Painters Plastic in the paint/hardware section of my local Walmart. They are typically heavy duty enough for most uses, yet not extremely taxing on ones financial resources. Yet, completely and totally invaluable if you need to create any sort of barrier between you and the ground, or the outside world. Simple plastic sheeting could be used for just about anything..ranging from sealing off a door to creating a make-shift shelter. Make this and the roll of duct tape a priority.

I need to get some sheeting and that silver tape. Oh and flash lights. What's frustrating is that I buy the flashlights and the kids get a hold of them

I'm getting way excited for May 2!!

This is so great!
I need to learn CPR. I want to start babysitting and working in preschools again.

And hey, is it just me, or have you stopped commenting on my blog?

Great tip on the plastic sheeting!

Another idea, if you are employed outside the home, ask your employer to hold a first aid/cpr course.

I have done it several times through my employer, and that way it cost me nothing. But, then again I was in charge of the health and safety committee, so I guess that was the pay-off!

Congratulate me....I had a thought..

those wind up flashlights would be perfect cause you don't have to worry about them running out of batteries. just let the kids wind them up for you

Thank you for the pet tag reminder! I wouldn't have thought to do that. Great idea!

I love that you are doing this. I made a checklist from week 1 and have almost all my items. It really brings peace of mind!

Donna 16 April, 2009 16:55

I need to do all of these things. I'm so overwhelmed with everything right now!! But I like how you're breaking it down into simpler tasks week-by-week. Thanks for the help!
